NewsMARTIN ROBBINS Plymouth’s 35-year-old Carl Drake appears to be coming to the end as he was out-pointed by Tex Woodward-trained Bristolian Martin Robbins over six two minute rounds at super-middle. Drake entered the ring looking in good shape and sporting a poncho and sombrero. But Carl soon found himself being outworked by Robbins and for all his stout robustness Drake started to look old and hittable very soon into the contest. For the most past, Robbins was able to pick Drake off before he got himself into punching position, but even if Carl did manage to get one home he could really compound his advantage as his snap and quickness appeared to have deserted him. Martin cleverly caught his shorter opponents with shots as he was attempting to lean and roll away from shots. The former super-middleweight masters king sported a shocked expression as he was picked off time and again. To his credit, Carl gave it a go in the last, but retired Welsh school master Wynford Jones scored it a shut out for Robbins at the close. NICK GIGG v NATHAN SHEEN
There was no doubt who was the most experienced boxer with Nick widely losing the first round and almost being pulled out of the fight by corner-man Tex Woodward. Tactics were changed, Nick closing down the reach difference and working hard at close quarters. It wasn't the most skilful boxing but was entertaining and enjoyed by an enthusiastic crowd. As the rounds progressed, so did Nick, but the wider points loss in the first round was enough to make Sheen the winner over six rounds. JANE COUCH M.B.E. - B.B.B.of C. MANAGER Successful boxer, successful promoter, Jane Couch now intends to add managerial success to her records. Continuing her stay at Spaniorum Farm, Jane is expecting to add to her initial signing of Liam Power from Torquay who recently won his first professional fight. Jane says, "It is amazing how many enquiries I have had from novice and experienced boxers, unfortunately some of them live too far away and I feel it is important that I see them regularly and get to know them." What would be really good is if a Bristol area boxer could be groomed to follow in Danny Butler's footsteps. A female boxer being trained from novice to World champion, as I was, would be even more exciting. Come on boys and girls get down to the farm gym and take the first step to an exciting career! JANE COUCH MBE Jane Couch MBE couldn't have got off to a better start after being granted a manager's licence by the B.B.B. of C. Her first signing, light-welterweight Liam Power from Torquay making his debut in the professional ring against Bradford-on-Avons hometown fighter Gareth Heard. In a 6 x 2 minute round contest that was the "fight of the night" Liam out-boxed the tough, hard hitting Heard who never stopped trying and was always there with a big punchers chance. Helping out Paul Guy in Powers corner, Tex Woodward said, "Jane has made a great signing with Liam Power and if he fulfils the potential he has shown tonight he should do well in the professional world".
