NewsHATTON PROMOTIONS - MARRIOTT HOTELBRISTOL - MARCH 14th, 2009 Continuing their backing of Spaniorum Farm boxers, Hatton Promotions could not be any other than delighted at the local boxers performances before a packed house at the popular Marriott Hotel. Tex Woodward’s latest signing, Martin Robins, an ex-Downend A.B.C. amateur, showed no signs of nerves as he claimed a 40-37 points win in his first professional outing against Welshpool’s Russell Pearce. Peter Leworthy, Spaniorum Farm, took his record to four straight wins out of four with a 40-36 points win over Swansea’s Craig Dyer. Stocky Danny Gwylim, also from the ‘Farm’ was well outreached by the tall and gangly Jamie Ambler from Aberystwyth but took the fight to the Welshman with optimistic , aggressive swings, which dropped Ambler in the second round and tipped the scales in favour of a close points win, 38-37 for the home fighter. Chris Long tested his recently damaged hand in a 4 x 2 minute exhibition, with Manchester import Alfonso Vieyra. Reluctant to use both hands Chris still gave his usual work-like performance against the young and talented Hatton Promotions fighter. The saying, “The best is saved till last”, proved to be true when Spaniorum’s Danny Butler faced Carl Drake, Plymouth, in a ten round bout for the Western Area Middleweight title. The two had met previously in a six round contest that Danny had won on points, a decision Carl disputed. This time Drake was intent on reversing that decision, fit and very strong he stalked Butler trying to score with powerful swings, they seldom landed, Danny’s footwork and upper body movement making him a hard target to hit. Periodic bursts of combination punching from the Bristol boxer were fast and accurate dropping Drake in the fifth round. The Plymouth puncher was up at two, took the mandatory eight count and renewed the battle. He was not going to give in but could not match Danny Butler for skills, fitness and determination. In their previous fight Carl thought he had won but this time he sportingly acknowledged that Danny had improved and was the better boxer. The referee scored the well contested ten round contest 98-93 in favour of Butler, a clear win for an improving Danny, but credit must be given to Carl for his fitness and determination. News Archive
