News - June 2008INTERNATIONAL MASTERS TITLECHRIS LONG, possibly gave one of his best performances when he challenged Martin Watson, Coatbridge, for the International Masters Light-welterweight title, in Motherwell, Scotland. Undoubtedly, Watson won most of the rounds with his fast and frequent combinations, but Long, despite his increasing deficit in points, was still there looking to land a big punch. In the interval between the eighth and ninth round, Tex Woodward, in Long’s corner, told him, “ If you don’t start throwing more punches I am going to pull you out!”. Chris objected strongly and increased his work-rate, cutting Martin’s eye and bruising his face, but it was too late. Had an unmarked Long used all the energy he had left after the ten rounds were over it would have been a closer fight. Referee Victor Loughlin scored the bout 100 - 91 in favour of Watson. NEW LICENCE HOLDERS TONY SARULLO, who already holds a B.B.B.of C. “Whip’s” licence, took another step forward towards becoming more involved in the competitive side of professional boxing when he was granted a “Second’s” licence at the latest B.B.B of C. Western Area Council meeting. Tony will get experience working with corner-man Stuart McKenzie and Manager/Trainer Tex Woodward Another new licence holder is 24 year old PETER LEWORTHY from Kingswood, Bristol. An experienced amateur boxer, Peter has worked hard over the last few months, adapting his amateur skills to succeed over the long distances of professional boxing. He comments, “This professional training is harder and more serious but it gives me a chance to aim for bigger targets”. Tex Woodward adds, “ Peter is a frail looking man but is surprisingly strong at super-featherweight. His greatest asset is that he works hard at training and listens to advice. We both look forward to his first pro’ contest. As a self employed carpenter he has been arranging his work around training sessions and will be ready to box at short notice”. Previous Articles
