NewsCHRIS LONG (Calne) V MARTIN GETHINBIRMINGHAM May 18th Finishing work as a builders labourer, driving 45 miles to Spaniorum Farm, meeting up with ‘second’ and driver Tony Surello and manager/trainer Tex Woodward, would be enough to take the fitness edge off most boxers, but worse was yet to come, a serious road accident brought traffic to a standstill for almost an hour on the outskirts of Birmingham. Chris Long must have wished he had stayed home as tension built up and doubts entered the mind as to whether the team would get to the Holiday Inn in time to box. Fortunately the traffic cleared in time, the hotel was reached, the routine of ’weighing in’, doctors examination, boxing kit on, hands bandaged, warm up and time to focus the mind on the job to come. Martin Gethin, with 15 wins to just three losses to his credit, could be forgiven for thinking he would have an easy nights work against an opponent with the record of 10 wins to 23 losses. It wasn’t to be! Chris had come to work and work he did throwing punches that missed, but numerous uppercuts that scored. There was no doubt that Martin was boxing well but his punches were not hurting Chris, who ploughed on with his job and eventually floored Gethin for an eight count. It was the punch that won the fight for Long with a one point margin. On this occasion, skill lost to determination. Tex Woodward said, “I was really pleased for Chris, he is the epitome of, “ have gloves, will travel”, and deserved the win for the effort he put into the fight”. DANNY BUTLER Danny Butler, now with 16 wins and one loss, is fulfilling his potential, capturing both The British Masters and Western Area Light-Middleweight championship. On June 13th he will be defending his title at The Marriott Hotel, Bristol, on a Hatton Promotions bill in association with Hatton boxing co-ordinator Jane Couch. Also on the bill will be unbeaten Spaniorum Farm boxers Choirboy Peter Leworthy Won 4 - Lost 0, and Martin Robbins Won 1 - Lost 0 News Archive
