News“SPANNY AMMY” AMATEUR BOXING CLUBSPANIORUM FARM GYM, COMPTON GREENFIELD. BS35 5RX Over 25 years ago, Tex Woodward converted an old shed on his farm into a boxing gym, with a boxing ring, two punch bags, a speed ball and a ‘top and bottom’ ball, which were provided by Tex’s nephew Geoff Woodward, a former Western Counties A.B.A. champion. The aim, to provide facilities for local boxers, amateur and professional, to train and compete in both categories. Geoff. training the amateurs and Tex the professionals. This was not acceptable to the A.B.A of England. Now, more than a quarter of a century later, with the gym facilities multiplied by more than four times in space and equipment, three boxing rings, numerous punch bags (both water and traditional) , speed balls, top and bottom balls, sauna and showers plus a separate weight training area, the A.B.A. of England have at last approved the application for an amateur club, “Spanny Ammy” to be affiliated to the A.B.A of E. Gym owner Tex Woodward says, “ I am really pleased that approval for an amateur club has been given. It has been frustrating to have such good facilities and not see them used by local amateurs when such famous names as Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno, Trevor Hughroy Currie, Jane Couch M.B.E. and other well known sports people from ‘home and abroad’ have taken advantage of using the gym. The club will be open to male and female boxers/trainees from the age of 12 years upwards. For more information contact:-
