Spaniorum Farm Gymnasium - The Early Years

In 1964 Tex Woodward left the R.A.F. after 12 years as a P.T.Instructor and Boxing Coach. He moved to Bristol with the ambition of opening a gym for boxers and keep-fit enthusiasts.

Initially living in a caravan with his wife, Pat, and three children, he worked nights at The Western Daily Press, sweeping up and handling newspapers.

With no money or financial backing the possibility of running a gym looked like a pipe dream that would never have smoke.

16 years later, after leaving the boxing world and turning his attention to building up an antique/secondhand business, the Woodward family left the city and moved into Spaniorum Farm, in the small rural village of Compton Greenfield, South Gloucestershire.

Boxing, temporarily shelved, had been replaced by coaching young squash players to International standard, and playing matches at a vastly lower level.
